Kinkaku-ji, or the Golden Pavilion, is a famous Zen temple in Kyoto, Japan, renowned for its top two floors covered in gold leaf. Originally built in the late 14th century as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it was later converted into a Buddhist temple after his death.
